- What is a hearing test?
When older people often ask others to repeat their words, we know that their hearing might not be as good as it used to be. This is where hearing tests come in, as they measure a person’s hearing ability to sounds with different loudness and frequencies.
With the hearing test, audiologist could further conclude if there is any infection or disease in the ear and if there is a conduction hearing loss, how severe the hearing loss is.
- What’s an audiometer and how it works
When it comes to hearing test, the audiometer is an essential tool.
The Pure Tone Audiometer is to diagnose the hearing level, which emits a sound at a certain frequency and a certain decibel level at a time to find your hearing threshold. In short, the process is called as tone audiometry.
The hearing test is conducted in a quiet, soundproof room. The audiometer transmits the different sounds to the headphones as you are wearing them, and you can indicate when you hear a sound, for example by raising your hand or pressing a button on the responser.
- Hearing test reports generated by the audiometer
The audiologist will need to test your left ear and right ear separately and will usually include an air conduction test and a bone conduction test. This is shown on an audiogram with different symbols, such as the one below and the audiologist can print it out.
Based on the results of the audiogram, the audiologist can determine if you have a hearing loss, how severe the hearing loss is, and whether hearing aids can help.
